The Can Countdown

Yesterday I ran to the grocery store to pick up a few staples. One item that I needed was canned dog food. A few weeks ago I started mixing canned/wet dog food into Eric's dry kibble. His appetite was starting to wan and I began feeding him the combo to make sure he ate, which he did. Back to yesterday, I bought two cans of food because that is all I needed to get him through to Monday, the day we are putting him down. Right in the middle of the dog food aisle, I felt tears coming to my eyes because those two little cans look so pathetic in my cart compared to the large number I usually buy. Also, those two cans were like a clock counting down to his death. He had only two cans of life left. Once home, I put the two cans on top of the microwave, but each time I walked into the kitchen my eyes immediately went to those two cans, so I moved the cans into a cupboard. Now there is only one full can left in the cupboard for his breakfast tomorrow morning, his last meal.
